Ingredients

For the Patty Melt:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slices of Swiss cheese

4 slices of hearty rye bread

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For the Secret Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon pickle relish

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

A dash of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

Make the Secret Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce (if using). Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Set aside.

Prepare the Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then form into 4 equal patties.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions (add more butter if needed), cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese while still in the skillet. Allow the cheese to melt (cover the skillet for a minute if desired).

Grill the Sandwich: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce. Place one cheesy patty on each slice of bread with the sauce, then add caramelized onions on top. Cap with another slice of bread, buttered side up.

Cook the Sandwich: In the same skillet, grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese is gooey and melted.

Serve: Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve warm with additional secret sauce on the side for dipping.
