Preheat the oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking.
Prepare the cookie batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie mix with the softened butter, medium speed until creamy.
Add the eggs: Incorporate the eggs one at a time, mixing until well combined. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until evenly mixed.
Mix wet and dry: Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until the batter is smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips for an extra chocolatey experience.
Bake the cakes: Divide the cake batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the cakes: Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10-15 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Layer the cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of chocolate fudge icing on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining icing.
Decorate: Top the cake with whipped cream and sprinkle chocolate shavings or chocolate sprinkles for a lavish finish.
Serve and enjoy: Slice into the decadent cake and serve with additional whipped cream, if desired. Enjoy the rich chocolate goodness!
