Ingredients

12 oz spaghetti

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 medium onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

15 oz can tomato sauce

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1 tsp sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

16 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Spaghetti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Brown the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent.

Add the Sauces: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Mix the Ricotta: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.

Layer the Casserole: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, start with a layer of half the spaghetti, followed by half of the meat sauce mixture. Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over this, then sprinkle with a layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layering process with the remaining ingredients.

Final Topping: Finish the casserole with a final layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent burning) and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.

Cool and Serve: Allow it to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
