At the heart of this casserole lies the star ingredient: croissants. Their light, airy structure and rich flavor lend an exceptional twist to the traditional French toast. The beauty of using croissants is that they soak up the custard beautifully while retaining their signature flakiness. This creates a delicious contrast in texture, as the outer layers crisp up during baking, while the interior remains soft and custardy.

Ingredients

6 large croissants, cut into 1-inch pieces

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus extra for serving)

1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries) for garnish

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

Prepare Croissants: Place the croissant pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish, ensuring they are scattered and layered well.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.

Pour Custard Over Croissants: Gently pour the custard mixture over the croissant pieces, making sure all pieces are soaked. Use a spatula to gently press the croissants down to ensure they absorb the mixture.

Let Sit: Allow the casserole to sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature, or cover it and refrigerate overnight for maximum absorption.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and garnish with fresh berries.

Enjoy: Slice and serve warm with additional maple syrup on the side!
