Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or ground turkey

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper, finely chopped (red or green)

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp Italian seasoning

1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and black pepper to taste

4 large Italian sandwich rolls

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

1/4 cup butter, softened

3 cloves garlic, minced (for the garlic bread spread)

1 tsp dried parsley

Instructions

Cook the Meat Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Sauté Vegetables: Add diced onion, minced garlic, and chopped bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 4-5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.

Combine Flavors: Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

Prepare Garlic Butter: While the meat mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, and dried parsley. Mix until well combined.

Prepare the Rolls: Cut the Italian sandwich rolls in half and spread the garlic butter mixture generously on the cut sides.

Toast the Rolls: Place the rolls on a baking sheet (cut side up) and bake for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown and toasted.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Once the meat mixture is ready, spoon a generous amount onto the toasted rolls. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the top.

Melt the Cheese: Return the assembled sloppy joes to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil or parsley, and serve warm.
