Ingredients

For the Cake:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup chopped pecans, toasted

For the Praline Topping:

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup pecans, chopped

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

    Prepare the Cake Batter:

      - In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.

        - Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

          - In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

            - Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients.

              - Stir in the vanilla extract and toasted pecans until just combined.

                Bake the Cake:

                  - Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared cake pans.

                    - Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

                      - Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

                        Make the Praline Topping:

                          - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter.

                            - Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil; then let it simmer for about 3-4 minutes, stirring often.

                              - Remove from heat and stir in the chopped pecans, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.

                                Assemble the Cake:

                                  - Once the cakes have cooled completely, place one layer on a serving plate.

                                    - Spread a portion of the praline topping over the first layer, then stack the second layer on top and repeat.

                                      - Top with the final layer and generously pour the remaining praline topping over the entire cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.

Serve: Let the cake set for about 15 minutes to allow the glaze to harden slightly. Slice and serve at room temperature, and enjoy the heavenly juxtaposition of the buttery cake and rich praline topping.
